Has your home or office been feeling cold lately, even though you’ve turned your furnace on and turned the thermostat up? If so, you may need to take a look at replacing the insulation. But insulation does more than just regulate the temperature of your home! The right insulation will also help to keep your home dry and in good shape over the years. That is why so many homeowners look for waterproof insulation!

Spray foam is a type of insulation that has increasingly grown in popularity among homeowners over recent years. So is spray foam insulation waterproof? Let’s find out!

How Does Spray Foam Insulation Work?

Spray Foam insulation is a type of insulating material that also works as an air and moisture barrier. Spray foam insulation is widely used to insulate buildings and seal cracks and gaps; this helps to make the building more energy-efficient and comfortable.

Spray foam insulation is created by a mixture of chemicals, which react very quickly, expanding on contact to create foam that insulates and provides a moisture barrier. There are two types of spray foam insulation: Open-Cell spray foam and Closed-Cell spray foam.

How Long Does Spray Foam Insulation Last?

Overtime, insulation tends to wear down due to various factors, including weather, critters, and general age. For example, although it can last several years, fiberglass insulation typically sags and deteriorates over time, leaving gaps that result in poor insulation.

One of the biggest benefits of using spray foam insulation is its durability. Spray foam insulation can last a lifetime, or roughly around 80 years; the majority of homeowners never have to replace their spray foam insulation.

Is Spray Foam Insulation Waterproof?

If you are wondering whether spray foam insulation is waterproof, you will first need to know what kind of spray foam insulation you are using or planning to use. There is open cell spray foam and closed cell spray foam. It all depends on the density of the spray foam.

Due to the density of the foam, open cell spray foam is not waterproof or water-resistant. On the other hand, closed cell spray foam is water resistant. Only high-density closed cell spray foams are waterproof.

Open Cell Spray Foam

Open Cell spray foam is a type of spray foam insulation that has room, like a small air bubble, left inside each cell of the foam. This causes the insulation to be light, flexible, and easy to work with. Some benefits of open cell spray foam is that it is cheaper and it allows you to insulate in hard-to-reach places.

Closed Cell Spray Foam

Closed cell spray foam has no space left in the cells of the foam. This causes the insulation to be rigid and very dense. It is water resistant, which helps with moisture control throughout your home. Two major benefits of closed cell spray are that it acts as a vapor barrier for your home and it helps to support the structural integrity of the home or building.
